🕸️ Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Plot Summary

After becoming Spider-Man and helping save his universe, Miles Morales is trying to balance his superhero responsibilities with his life in Brooklyn.

He still misses Gwen Stacy, who is living her own life in another universe.

When Gwen returns, Miles discovers that she belongs to a much larger community of Spider-People.

Miles is eventually transported across the multiverse and introduced to the Spider Society, a massive organization of Spider-People dedicated to protecting the stability of different universes.

There he meets Miguel O’Hara, also known as Spider-Man 2099, who leads the Spider Society.

Miles soon discovers that the Spider-People have strict rules about how certain events are supposed to unfold.

But Miles doesn’t agree with everything they’re telling him.

Meanwhile, the Spot has evolved from a seemingly ridiculous villain into a dangerous threat capable of moving between dimensions.

As the conflict grows, Miles finds himself caught between the expectations of the Spider Society and his determination to protect the people he loves.

Eventually, Miles must choose his own path — even if that means standing against the other Spider-People.

Sony’s official synopsis describes Miles being catapulted across the Multiverse, encountering the Spider Society and becoming pitted against the other Spider-People as he tries to save those he loves.

⭐ Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Review: Is It Still Worth Watching?

Absolutely — and it’s one of the most ambitious Spider-Man movies ever made.

Across the Spider-Verse takes the creative ideas of Into the Spider-Verse and expands them dramatically.

The first movie introduced audiences to the idea that there could be multiple Spider-People.

The sequel turns that concept into an enormous multiverse filled with different versions of Spider-Man, each with their own personalities, histories and visual styles.

Miles Morales remains the heart of the story.

His journey isn’t simply about defeating another villain. It’s about deciding whether he should accept a predetermined path or create his own.

That idea gives the movie considerably more emotional depth than a typical superhero sequel.

The relationship between Miles and Gwen is also expanded.

Gwen gets more time to explore her own struggles, family relationships and responsibilities, making her more than simply Miles’ friend or romantic interest.

Then there’s Miguel O’Hara.

Oscar Isaac gives Spider-Man 2099 a serious, intense personality that contrasts nicely with the more humorous Spider-People around him.

The Spot is another surprisingly strong addition.

What begins as an almost comedic character gradually becomes one of the movie’s most dangerous threats.

Visually, the film is extraordinary.

Different dimensions have their own artistic identities, meaning that the animation itself becomes part of the storytelling.

The movie also isn’t afraid to experiment with color, movement, perspective and comic-book imagery.

The one major warning is that Across the Spider-Verse is designed as part of a continuing story.

Its ending does not provide a traditional standalone conclusion.

Instead, it leaves Miles’ story at a major turning point.

For viewers who enjoyed Into the Spider-Verse, however, that is part of the excitement.

MovieWatchBase Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

🕷️ Where Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Fits in the Spider-Man Movies in Order

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is the second movie in the animated Spider-Verse series.

The animated sequence is:

🕷️ Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018)
↓
🕷️ Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023)

Our 🕷️ Spider-Man Movies in Order pillar explains how this animated universe fits alongside the live-action Spider-Man eras.

For the best experience, watch Into the Spider-Verse before Across the Spider-Verse.

That way, you’ll understand Miles’ origin, his relationship with Peter B. Parker and the foundations of the Spider-Verse.

🔗 Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and the Larger Spider-Man Universe

One of the most fascinating things about Across the Spider-Verse is how it expands the idea of Spider-Man beyond a single character.

Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland represent different live-action versions of Peter Parker.

Miles Morales represents another universe and another Spider-Man story.

The movie explores the idea that these different versions can coexist across a larger multiverse.

That makes the animated Spider-Verse especially interesting alongside 🕷️ Spider-Man: No Way Home, which also explores multiple Spider-Man universes.

If you want to see the live-action multiverse story, continue to our 🕷️ Where to Watch Spider-Man: No Way Home guide.
